What size boxing gloves do you need?

Boxing gloves are sized in ounces (Oz). The gloves here run from 4 Oz to 14 Oz. The Excalibur listings say to match the size to your weight, your hand size and your training style.

The smallest size, 4 Oz, appears only on the adidas Speed 50, which adidas lists for kids and adults. 6 Oz is the only size of the Excalibur 8096, a glove made for young and beginner boxers. Every other model here comes in 10 and 12 Oz.

Which glove matches your training?

  • Excalibur 8096 and 8109 (semi-PU): a light synthetic shell. The 8096 is listed for young and beginner boxers, the 8109 for beginners and fitness boxing.
  • Excalibur 8119 (PU): a durable synthetic leather shell built for everyday training, easy to wipe clean.
  • Excalibur 8075 (PU): listed for regular training and sparring, in 10, 12 and 14 Oz.
  • Excalibur 8121 (leather): for serious training and sparring. The listing says the leather breaks in with use and holds its shape.
  • adidas Speed 50, Hybrid 50 and Hybrid 100: PU gloves. The Hybrid 50 and Hybrid 100 have a wide Velcro strap, and adidas lists the Hybrid 100 for bag work, mitt training, fitness classes and light sparring.

PU or leather?

PU is a synthetic leather. It is easy to clean, and semi-PU keeps a glove light. Leather, on the Excalibur 8121, is the shell the listings describe as breaking in with use. The adidas Hybrid gloves close with a wide Velcro strap, and the Speed 50 uses Velcro and elastic strapping with a 7.5 cm wrap-around strap.

If you are starting boxing, kickboxing or fitness classes, start with the Excalibur 8109 or the adidas Hybrid 50 in 10 or 12 Oz. Move to the 8121 leather glove when you spar often. Add hand wraps and pads from boxing accessories, or see all martial arts gear.
