Which tennis ball do you need: a standard ball or a slower stage ball?

Tennis balls here come in two groups. Standard pressurized balls are for regular play. Stage balls bounce lower and slower, so a new player gets more time to hit.

  • Standard yellow: Babolat Team All Court is a pressurized ball built for regular players and training sessions. Dunlop ATP Championship is an entry-level ball for casual, club and leisure players.
  • Green: Wilson Starter Green Play is a transition ball for aspiring juniors and adults.
  • Orange, Stage 2: bounces about 50% slower than a standard ball and is designed for a 60-foot court. Tecnifibre recommends it for ages 9 to 10.
  • Red, Stage 3: bounces about 75% slower and is designed for a 36-foot court. Tecnifibre recommends it for ages 6 and under.

How many tennis balls come in a pack?

Pack size changes with the job. A tin or can holds a few balls for a match: the Slazenger Wimbledon tin holds 3, and the Wilson Starter Green Play comes in a can of 4. Wilson Starter Tour Foam balls come as a pack of 6. For coaching a group, Tecnifibre sells bags of 36 balls in Stage 2 orange and in Stage 3 red.

Which tennis balls are made for competition?

Tecnifibre describes the X-One as a lively, fast ball for top level competition players. Slazenger Wimbledon is a regular-duty yellow ball, the one used at the Wimbledon tournament. Neither is a learning ball.

If you are buying for a child aged 6 or under, start with a Stage 3 red ball. For adult club play, start with Babolat Team All Court. See the rest of our tennis gear, or the range of tennis for kids.
