Is every whey protein isolate on this page whey only?

Whey protein isolate is a whey protein that carries less fat and carbs with its protein. But not every tub sold as an isolate is whey alone, and the front of the tub will not always tell you. Some products use whey isolate as the protein. Others mix whey with beef, milk or plant isolates. Read the ingredient line before you buy.

• Whey isolate as the protein: Nutrex Iso Fit, Dymatize ISO100 (with hydrolysed whey), Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Isolate and Platinum Hydro Whey, and NOVOGEN Whey Protein Isolate
• Whey with beef: Muscle Add Iso Add Plus, made from hydrolysed whey and hydrolysed beef protein
• Three sources: Max Muscle Iso Complex, with hydrolysed beef peptides, milk protein isolate and whey protein isolate
• Beef, whey and plant: Red Rex All In Isolate

None of these is a bad choice. A mixed tub is simply a different product from a whey-only isolate, so compare like with like.

What do the labels show per serving?

Nutrex Iso Fit lists 25 g of protein with 2 g of carbs. Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Isolate lists 25 g of protein with 1 g of carbs and 0.5 g of fat. The mixed tubs list 30 g per serving: Red Rex All In Isolate, Muscle Add Iso Add Plus and Max Muscle Iso Complex. Platinum Hydro Whey also lists 30 g of isolate whey protein.

So when you compare grams, check which proteins make up those grams.

Which tub size should you pick?

Dymatize ISO100 comes in a 20-serving 600 g tub, a small way to try a flavour such as Fruity Pebbles. Many isolates here come in 30-serving tubs. For long-term use there are bigger sizes: Nutrex Iso Fit reaches 70 servings in the 5 lb tub, and Dymatize ISO100 gives 77 servings in 2.257 kg.

If you are new to isolate, start with a 30-serving whey-only tub such as Nutrex Iso Fit or NOVOGEN Whey Protein Isolate, in a flavour you know. For concentrates and blends too, see whey protein, or browse all sports supplements.
