Downshifter 13 or Downshifter 14: what changed?

This page carries two versions of Nike's everyday road running shoe, for men and for women. Here is what the Nike listings say about each:

• Cushioning: the Downshifter 14 has increased midsole cushioning, which Nike says gives more comfort and responsiveness than the previous version.
• Upper: the 14 uses an engineered open-hole mesh for breathability. The 13 has a soft, breathable mesh.
• Fit: both wrap the midfoot with an internal fit band for a secure, locked-in feel.
• Drop: both list a 10 mm heel-to-toe drop.

The Downshifter 13 has details of its own. Some listings say its outsole is made from at least 15% Nike Grind material, which comes from scraps of the shoe-making process. Several mention reflective design details.

Who is the Downshifter made for?

Nike writes the Downshifter 13 for runners at every stage, whether you are just starting your running journey or want to change up your pace. The 14 is built for everyday road running, from short jogs to longer training sessions. Both are road shoes, with an outsole made for traction on road surfaces.

Getting the size right

The listed sizes run from 40 to 47 1/2 on the men's pairs and from 36 to 42 on the women's pairs. Some Downshifter 13 listings, men's and women's, say the shoe fits small and recommend ordering half a size up, so check the note on the pair you choose.

If you run on roads most days, take the Downshifter 14 for its extra midsole cushioning. For other pairs, see Nike running shoes, men's running and women's running shoes.
